Phoolan Devi ordered to face trial

Morena, July 4. (PTI): The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gwalior, A K Pandey, has ordered that Samajwadi Party MP and former bandit queen Phoolan Devi face trial for allegedly throwing slippers at a prisoner and abusing him in Gwalior Jail on June 2, 1986.

Pandey has written to the Lok Sabha Speaker G M Balayogi, urging him to direct her to be present in the court during hearing of the trial.

The Magistrate passed the orders yesterday on a review petition that had been dismissed by a lower court on January 5, 1987 but had been sent to him for further action.

A report about the incident had also been filed with the Gwalior police and the first class Magistrate had on November 19, 1986 treated the offence as cognisable under Sections 323 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and fixed it for evidence.
